Ellen's Notes:
Some of you might remember Missy. She was the sad little dog who ended up in Jefferson County Animal Control after her owner died. And then we found out she had heartworms and treated her for that. For awhile, she wasn't interested in anything but resting on my bed. That was what she needed.
Well, it wasn't long before she started playing with other dogs and seeking out company. Her energy restored, her tail found its wag. Then Saturday she found her new home but spent the first 24 hours there in something of a panic. The first thing she did was hide under their car until I came out to coax her.
I've heard from her new humans. By Sunday afternoon, she was giving kisses, snuggling with the other dog and greeting mom and dad at the door. Good news for Missy.
You may also remember BooBoo's story. He's the young schnauzer who ended up in a shelter after suffering a serious puncture wound to the neck. The wound became badly infected and BooBoo's life was at risk.
Now BooBoo is ready for a home. After surgery here in St. Louis, he's looking and feeling much better. He's a sweet boy who will certainly back someone a great pet.
I mailed Lady's people recently. She's a tri-colored Australian Shepherd, a sweet, affectionate dog, one of my favorites. I delivered her to her new home and liked what I saw there. Lady seemed to like it too. So I was surprised to hear that after I left, she turned into a nervous, high-strung dog, leaving her humans to wonder if this was going to work out.
It did. A few days later and Lady was fine, the cats came out of hiding, and everyone felt good.
I was adding up numbers lately. We found homes for more than 500 dogs in 2008. That's pretty good. They came from everywhere -- shelters, owners, puppymills, the streets, and even a few from a research facility. Some came to us in good shape, ready to slide easily into new homes. Others needed a lot of work before they were ready.
We hope they're all happy now. If you've got one of them, let us know.
