    Today I'd just like to share a couple pictures.  That's Anna Kimber up there with her new best friends.  Ann is a playful, friendly boxer we acquired at a dog auction.  We knew she was a prize when we saw  her.  We don't know why she ended up at an auction, but it might have been a lucky break for her.  She's a wonderful dog with a great new family.  We hear she's settling in quickly and the children love her.

    Of course, some dogs need children.  Others would appreciate a senior citizen who will cherish them.

    So here's Lucy and Bill.  Bill had recently lost his dog of old age.  He was lonely and missed not having a dog around to keep him company.  Turned out Lucy was just his type.  We found Lucy in St Louis County Animal Control.  She was at risk for euthanasia and in need of rescue.  We took her in and were lucky enough find someone who thought she was just perfect.

    So congratulations to Lucy and Bill.

So contragulatioss to all the dogs who have recently found homes and to all who we hope will soon find theirs.

    Some dogs just love water.  We know labs love water.  But I was surprised when the dog who loved water the most at my place turned out to be a Jack Russell Terrier.  That's our Ruby.

    And it isn't just pools, lakes and rivers that thrill our Ruby.  A few days ago, Ruby found her forever home with a famiy that had just lost their elderly Jack Russell -- also named Ruby.

    Ruby's new family has a young boy,who, as it happens, needed a bath.  And who do you think joined him?

    Yup, Ruby.

Of course, those little cars looked like a lot of fun too.

    This week also saw Woodstock going to his new home.  Some people thought we should rename Woodstock either scarface or Joker because of the scar on his face.  Before we took Woodstock into our program, he was at our vet's office recovering from being hit by a car.  One side of his face was swollen beyond recognition.  Now he has only a scar running from eye to mouth.  We think it's charming.  So congratulations to Woodstock, and please stay away from cars.

    We have a few other adoptions pending and our looking forward to another good weekend.

    Thanks to the Purina Pet Adoption Program, we have funding to cover the adoption fees for two or three more dogs when they are adopted by persons 55 years old older.

    We've selected Blosson, Lois, and Naomi.

    Blossom, above, is a friendly lady who doesn't act her age.  People sometimes confuse her for a puppy.  She's not.   She's about 9 years old and can still jump a low fence.  She's be a fine pet for anyone with a high fence or who will take her on walks.  Blossom loves her people and wants to be close. 

    And then there's Lois, a senior dachshund mix.  Lois walks well on a leash and alway does her "business" when out walking.  She does appreciate frequent outdoor breaks during her day.  Lois gets along with other dogs and cats but would also do find as an only dog.  Here's Lois.

And finally here's Naomi, a shy little Pekingese.  She's a special dog with limited vision, but her foster mom says she sees well enough to get around fine.  All she needs is a special person who will appreciate her.  Her's Naomi.

Mandy finds a home

Sometimes I'm amazed.  I never thought Mandy would find a home so easily. She was the poster dog for unadoptable when her former owner dropped her off at Jefferson County Animal Control.  He was off to an assisted living facility.  Mandy was a mess.  At age 10 or so,  Mandy's chances for adoption were nill until we decided to take her in, treat her various infections, remove a tumor and have her groomed.

Saturday, after only a few weeks with us, she found a home with an elderly couple, parents of someone who has adopted from us before.  When I last saw Mandy, she was walking carefully alongside the man's wheelchair.  And she seemed pleased with herself and her new situation.

And in other news, Hansel found a new home.  Hansel is Disney cute, and I never thought we'd have trouble finding him a home.  We'd originally adopted him out as a puppy.  He came back because his person was traveling a lot with her new job.  Later Hansel was adopted by an older women who developed health problems and could no longer keep him.  Finally, Hansel has found what we hope will be his final home. Here he is.

Delilah also found her home last weekend.  We'd had her about a month, but I never thought we'd have her more than a few days.  She was perfect.  I thought we'd be breaking up fights over her.  She's a small dog -- but not too small -- still big enough to be a real dog, one that will learn tricks, chase balls, and go on walks and runs.  The rest of the time she could be the perfect lapdog. Delilah now has a family, including a young girl to call her own.

    We're picking up a couple dogs from a gassing facility tomorrow.  We've also taken in some small dogs from St. Louis County.  I've promised to take on a fat, black lab, which I'll pick up Sunday.

    I still have too many foster parents on vacations, but they're slowly starting to drift back into town.  I see better days ahead.

Stella, Mandy, Sasha, Sam, Trivia, Pillows & More

    I was at Jefferson County Animal Control when one of the Animal Control Officers brought in Winnie.  They'd caught the tiny dog in a humane trap after neighbors who'd spotted her running loose couldn't catch her.  The officer carefully removed the terrified Toy Fox Terrier from the trap and placed her in a cage, where she scrunched herself into a small ball.  I put my name on her intake form and said I'd take her if no one claimed her.

    I week later she was already a new dog...no longer terrified, only a slight bit timid.  I brought her home and scheduled her vet visit.  Soon she was ready to find a new home with Hilary and Steve.  They emailed recently to say Winnie was now known as Stella and that she was "absolutely an amazing dog -- so well-behaved and eager to please.  She has just filled our home withh so much love!  You guys were worried she might be a door darter because she was a stray, but Stella definitely isn't.  She wants to be wherever we are and comes when called.  She is such a joy!'

    Stella has definitely found the life we hope for all of our rescued dogs. That's her above with Hillary in arty black and white.

    At my home, things are still pretty crazy. I'm still beyond my comfort level with dogs because of too many foster parents taking vacations at the same time and a couple dogs coming back from earlier adoptions.  I will survive, I keep telling myself.  Meanwhile I bought four new pillows to replace those that had been torn apart by dogs. 

    I've also heard from people who might want to adopt Mandy, a 10 year old shepherd mix whose owner turned her in to a shelter because he was going into an assisted living facility.  Mandy needed dental cleaning, worming, and treatment for ear and urinary tract infections.  She also had a large tumor on her hip and was in serious need of grooming.  She's now beautiful, free of infections, tumor-free and ready to go.  Here she is.

Another older dog (7 or 8 years) now ready for adoption is Sasha the chocolate labrador retriever.  Her owners moved and left her behind. She ended up in St. Charles City Animal Control, where we picked her up.   She's had knee surgery to repair a torn acl, and is now ready for a home.  Her foster parents say she's just about perfect.  Here she is.

This week also saw the adoption of Russell, the young and crazy Jack Russell Terrier.  His new person has lived with Jack Russell's most of her life, so we think it will work. We accepted Russell from a woman who had become homeless and could no longer keep him.  Here's Russell.

This week I took two trips to the U of Missouri Veterinary School Clinic with Samson, the German Shepherd with the respiratory condition he can't seem to shake.  Vets there think they've figured it out, and Sam may begin a new treatment program if a couple more tests confirm their diagnosis.  Fingers crossed. Say hi to Sam.

And we're getting ready for our Trivia Night which will be Saturday, September 28, at Assumption Prish of Mattese, 4709 Mattis Rd.
