Hemingway and Kati
The St. Louis Senior Dog Project is a not-for-profit dog rescue organization specializing in older dogs but taking in and finding homes for dogs of all ages...even puppies. Meet and adopt your new best friend 11 to 3 Saturday, October 22, in the Kirkwood Petco. To see which dogs will be there, go Here.
They're still pretty skinny and a little bit shy, but Hemingway and Kati are joyful dogs now ready for new homes.
When I first saw the pair, they were in Jefferson County Animal Control hunkered down in the back of their kennels, fearful and pathetic. Both were skeletal and infested with fleas and intestinal worms. Their coats were patchy. They were not adoptable.
Then their lives began to change. Jefferson College Veterinary Technology Program took home Kati, who helped teach students about the care of dogs, including spaying, vaccinating, and treating for various illnesses.
Hemingway came home with ST. Louis Senior Dog Project where he began his recovery. The food was delicious. The company was loving. The veterinary care was excellent He soon began gaining weight. His coat grew more handsome. And best of all, he soon came out of the shadows and became a cuddly, playful boy.
This week Senior Dog Project also took in Kati at the end of the first quarter at Jefferson College. Hem and Kati, who had come in to the shelter together, remembered each other and began playing. Watching two happy, healthy dogs at play is a wonderful sight.
So what's next for this pair?
Looks like one of the veterinary technology students at Jefferson College wants to adopt Kati. This person known, loves, and understands Kati. Here's a picture of Kati.
Pretty girl, don't you think?
And here's Hemingway, joyful with a new toy.
I can't really exaggerate how much these dogs have changed since that day I first saw them in the shelter. They seem years younger, not to mention more confident and healthier.
Hemingway is still available. He is initially shy around new people but I may bring him to an adoption event Saturday at Kirkwood Petco. We want only the best for him, so any applicants will be carefully screened, including a home visit.
